Old Growth Forests are not all the same. The Old Growth Rainforest on the west side of Vancouver Island in Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park has the world’s tallest Sitka Spruce and giant Western Red Cedars.
Clayquot Sound in theClayquot Sound Biosphere Reserve contains the largest untouched wilderness Rainforests on Vancouver Island. BC’s Pacific Temperate Rainforests have the highest biomass per hectare of any ecosystem on earth.
On the East side of Vancouver Island, the Old Growth Ancient Forest Grove,
Cathedral Grove (MacMillan Park) has Douglas Firs 247 feet tall and 9 feet in diameter.
The BC Big Tree Registry records the largest trees in B.C. The Sitka Spruce in the Little Qualicum River floodplain is the tallest on the East side of Vancouver Island and the fourth tallest in B.C. and was recorded by your guide, Gary Murdock.
