Salmon Forest Nature Tour
A choice wilderness area off the beaten track yet only minutes from town. This rare Sitka Spruce grove, the largest grove found on the east side of Vancouver Island is home to the third tallest Sitka Spruce recorded in B.C. It’s almost like being in the Carmanah Rainforest! Learn about plant communities and their relationships with each other. Wildflowers and plants that First Nations people use for medicine and ceremonies are abundant here.
The Little Qualicum River supports all five species of salmon as well as Steelhead and Cutthroat trout. Salmon carcasses are scattered throughout the forest by eagles and bears during spawning season and contribute to the incredible growth and diversity of the Forest. Numerous songbirds, birds of prey, woodpecker’s, deer, cougar, bear and wolf use the forest. A short part of the trail is a bit steep. Trail length is 2.5 km’s mostly flat.
